🎒 Back to School: Helping Kids Get Back Into Their Routine
The summer holidays have flown by!
After weeks of later mornings, busy days, family time and plenty of fun, it can feel strange for children — and parents — to suddenly switch back into school mode.
With the new school year starting next week, getting back into a routine now can help make those first few days feel a little less overwhelming.
Here are a few simple ways to help your child get ready for the return to school.
⏰ Start Adjusting Sleep Times
One of the biggest changes after the holidays is getting back to those early mornings.
If bedtime and wake-up times have gradually crept later over the summer, try moving them back towards their usual school-day times before school starts.
There’s no need to make a dramatic change overnight. Gradually bringing bedtime forward and getting children up a little earlier can give their bodies time to adjust.
A good night’s sleep can make a big difference to how children feel, concentrate and cope during the school day.
🎒 Get Ready the Night Before
A little preparation can make busy mornings much easier.
Before the first day, encourage your child to help get things ready, such as:
Their school uniform
School bag
Shoes
Lunch box
Water bottle
Any books or equipment they need
Getting children involved in preparing for school can also help them feel more organised and ready for the new year.
🍎 Bring Back Regular Mealtimes
Holiday routines often mean meals happen at different times — and that's completely normal!
As school approaches, gradually getting back to regular breakfast, lunch and dinner times can help children settle into their school-day routine.
And don't forget breakfast! A nutritious breakfast can help children feel ready for the day ahead.
🏃 Keep Moving!
Just because summer camp has finished doesn't mean the fun and activity have to stop.
Try to keep some physical activity in your child's routine once school starts. This could be anything from playing in the park and riding a bike to kicking a football around, going for a family walk or taking part in an after-school sports club.
Being active is a great way for children to let off steam, have fun and spend time away from screens after a day in the classroom.
🧠 Talk About Going Back to School
For some children, returning to school is exciting. For others, it can bring a few nerves — particularly if they're starting a new year group, moving schools or facing other changes.
Take some time to talk about how they're feeling.
Ask what they're looking forward to, what they're feeling unsure about and whether there's anything they'd like to talk through.
Sometimes, simply knowing that they have someone to talk to can make those first-day nerves feel much more manageable.
📅 Remember That It Takes Time
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that getting back into a routine doesn't happen instantly.
The first few days might feel tiring. Mornings might be a little chaotic. Bedtimes might take some adjusting.
That's okay!
After several weeks of holiday freedom, it's completely normal for children to need a little time to settle back into the structure of school.
Give them — and yourself — some patience while everyone finds their rhythm again.
